Cozad School Board Approves Hird As Guidance Counselor
The Cozad Community Schools Board of Education met for a regular meeting on Monday, June 20, 2016.
Under Administrative Reports, High School Principal Bill Beckenhauer notes that the 25 students enrolled in the summer credit recovery program are doing well.
Beckenhauer and the administrative team attended the SWC Leadership Summit and Leadership Retreat at ESU 10 in June.
“We’re still working on completing staffing for the upcoming school year, including Social Studies, Guidance Counselor and Administrative Assistant positions,” Beckenhauer reported. “Filling positions has been a real challenge this year,” he continued.
Middle School Principal Brian Regelin reported on changes in iPads for middle school students for the 2016-2017 school year and noted that scheduling should be finalized this week.
Elementary Principal Dale Henderson is also working on the 2016-2017 schedule and reported on changes to the student handbook.
Changes to the handbook include:
-- Delete ’10 tardies = 1 absence’ recorded in Power School. This does not deter tardies.
-- Student Cell Phone Use – new policy asks students to wait to use cell phones until after they exit the building.
-- Lunch Balances – students will be able to contract parents when they have accrued a negative lunch balance, however this statement is being deleted from the handbook. Students will not be receiving an alternative lunch menu when they have a negative balance.
Special Education Director Jill Beckenhauer reported on the Program-Wide Pyramid Model Coaching Initiative, Cozad Evaluation Snapshot: July 2015 – May 2016.
Board members approved the hiring of Bruce Hird for the High School Counselor position as recommended by Superintendent Joel Applegate and Beckenhauer for the 2016-2017 school year.
Approval was granted for the resignation of High School Social Studies teacher Will Reutzel. Reutzel has been in the school system for ten years and has accepted a teaching position and high school girls’ basketball coaching job at Shelton Public Schools for the upcoming year.
High School Activities Secretary Jessica Lewis was allowed to withdraw her resignation and will remain in the high school office.
The board gave approval to grant attendance waivers for three high school students as presented by Principal Beckenhauer.
The milk bid for the 2016-2017 school year was given to Dean Foods Land O’ Lakes. The present milk provider has been Hiland Diary Foods who had also submitted a bid.
The board members approved continuation of the offering of Cozad Community Wellness Center stipends to staff for the upcoming term.
Also approved was the second reading of the board policy relating to electronic devices.
Board members discussed and approved the second reading of the board policy relating to the transportation of non-school groups. This policy was recently revisited when school buses were requested for the air show and fly-in at the Cozad Municipal Airport earlier this month.
Discussion items included the first reading of the policy relating to graduation requirements.
Summer project updates were presented, and it was reported that a work session led by Marcia Herring, Director of Board Leadership, Nebraska Association of School Boards is set for Thursday, October 6, 2016 at 6:00 p.m.
The next regular board meeting is scheduled for Monday, July 18, beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the superintendent’s office in the district office building.
