Pannell Keynote Highlights The Sacrifices of Veterans
Allen Pannell, the Administrator of the Nebraska Veterans Cemetery in Alliance, delivered the keynote address during the Cozad Veterans Day ceremony Wednesday.
Pannell served in the United States Army as a Surgical Technician. He served for five years as a Surgical Technician and received a honorable discharge and continued working in the medical field for six more years.
Allen Pannell spoke of the great value to remember Veterans as well as celebrate their lives whether living or deceased. Pannell gave many examples that he cherishes from his experiences with military ceremonies.
The program, which attracted a large audience, also featured the presentation of winning Voice of Democracy Contest speeches. The theme for this year’s essay was, “My Vision For America”
Abigail Etherton was the first place contest winner. Alyssa Schneider placed second. The contest was sponsored by the Cozad VFW Post No. 890 and Auxiliary.
Scott Schmidt, VFW Post #890 Adjutant, served as the Master of Ceremonies. Colors were presented by the Cozad Honor Guard.
Special entertainment was presented by Mrs. Patty Fenstermacher with a patriotic rendition of ‘The Battle Hymn of the Republic’.
The Invocation and Benediction were presented by Pastor John States of the Cozad Christian Church.
Selections were also featured by the CHS Band, under the direction of Mr. Mark Messner, including “The National Anthem” and a military medley, “Salute to America’s Finest”.
The Cozad High School Chamber Singers and Bel Canto Choir, directed by Stacie Blackmore, performed “Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep”. Taps were played by Kolton Morse
Monday evening, the annual Veterans Day Supper was held at the Elks Club. Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest winners that were chosen from a large group of writers that best wrote, “What Freedom Means To Me,” were formally announced and presented their contest entries .
