Reds Score Victory Over Melons In Juniors Action
Cashing in with runners in scoring position was the formula for success for the Cozad Juniors as they defeated host Gothenburg 6-1 at the Melon Patch on Wednesday evening.
The score remained 0-0 until the Reds were able to get a leadoff single from Nathan Karel, who would eventually score on a passed ball to give Cozad a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Gothenburg would threaten to score when Noah Larson singled and then walks were issued to Logan Carlson and Vince Nichols to fill the sacks with socks. Cozad’s Adam Cole recovered quite nicely to earn a strikeout for the third out of the inning and end the threat.
Soon there after, Adam Cole would help out his own cause with a single and then score on a sacrifice off the bat of Kaleb Gibbens to make the score 2-0 at the end of the fifth inning of play.
Adding insurance on the scoreboard would be an understatement to what the Reds were able to crash through with during the top of the sixth inning. Cozad got back-to-back singles off the bats of Jonathan Neill and Nathan Karel to power the Reds surge on offense. After a Klint Gill walk, Adam Cole knocked in a pair of runs on a mishandled hit to the left side that pushed across two runs. Soon thereafter Gill and Cole scored as well to extend the Reds lead to the tune of 6-0 at the end of the sixth stanza.
Gothenburg was able to create a little stir in the bottom of the seventh inning when Vince Nichols gained access to first base on a dropped third strike and then scored on a two-out Blake Riley RBI-single to make the score 6-1.
Cozad closed the door on the comeback by recording the third out.
Adam Cole notched the win on the mound while allowing just four hits over seven inning. Cole struckout eight Melons batters.
Noah Gugleman led the Melons hitters with a double and single to his credit.
