Lexington Native: Denise Kjar, age 64 (1947-2012)

Denise Kjar, 64 of Lincoln, Nebraska, died Monday, March 5th, 2012, at the Golden LivingCenter in Cozad, Nebraska.

Denise was born December 12th, 1947, at Lexington, Nebraska, to Paul and Odessa (Kloepping) Kjar. She graduated from Lexington High School and later, the Lincoln School of Commerce.

Denise did secretarial work at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln following her schooling. For a short time, she had worked as secretary for the newly hired Tom Osborne. Following her time at the university, she worked at the Nebraska State Capitol Building. Denise lived most of her life in Lincoln and returned to the Cozad area as her health declined to be close to family.

Denise was a free-spirited person her entire life. She was an avid gardener; even going so far as to replace her lawn with flowers and vegetables. Denise orchestrated a special localized event in Lincoln where people would gather together bringing a broad assortment of different tomatoes to compare, contrast and of coarse, sample. She was a gifted seamstress, but only set her hands to purpose as a hobby. She frequented the local thrift shops and enjoyed taking walks.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents.

Survivors include her parents, Paul and Odessa Kjar of Cozad, Nebraska; brother, Thomas (Peg) Kjar of Cozad; nieces and nephews, Audra (Chris) Dishman of Malcom, Nebraska, Tony (Crystal) Kjar of Lincoln, Abbie Jones of Kearney, Nebraska, Andrew (Maira) Sherman of Lincoln and Jeremy Sherman of Lincoln.

Services were held on Friday, March 9th, 2012, at 10:30 a.m., at the Berryman Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Jeremy Jech officiating. Burial was in the Cozad Cemetery.

A memorial has been established in her memory. Condolences may be shared at berrymanfuneralhome.com.
