Lady Haymakers Nine Are Eager For 2014 Diamond Campaign

Getting their feet wet by diving in head first were the youthful filled squad of Lady Haymakers this past season on the diamond. With an added year of experience and strength, the Red and Black have the potential to post a season to remember during their 2014 campaign.

The Lady Haymakers return nine starters and 10 total letterwinners to the diamond for the upcoming season.

Leading the pitching staff for the Red and Black will be Ali Arndt and Sammy Crick.

This past season Arndt was a workhorse that gained valuable experience against some of the best hitting teams in central and western Nebraska. Arndt finished the season with an overall ERA?of 3.12 with seven wins while striking out 69 batters. Ali was able to finish the 2013 season with a WHIP of 1.87. This past summer, Arndt gained even more valuable experience and strength to make her even more dynamic on the mound.

Back from an injury riddle season is Sammy Crick. Crick has the skills to be a stellar pitcher for the Red and Black as well. She finished the 2013 season with four wins and a pair of saves while posting an ERA?of 2.57. Crick is an offensive weapon along with her pitching prowess to make her an everyday player.

Senior Emily Reyes has been a mainstay in the lineup for the Lady Haymakers throughout her career. She has the speed and experience to play in the infield or the outfield defensively and prosper. Reyes batted .398, had a slugging percentage of .538 and posted an on-base percentage of .457. Showing power at the plate, Reyes connected for eight doubles while driving in 22 RBI’s and scoring 25 runs in 2013. Reyes has the potential to be one of the better power hitters every time she steps on the diamond.

Senior Erika Smith was a defensive standout for the Haymakers this past season. Smith will again be asked to patrol the outfield for the Red and Black this season. At the plate, Erika Smith hopes to increase her consistency during the upcoming 2014 season.

Joining Smith in the outfield as returning starters are Alyssa Schneider and Darci Hoffmaster. Both Schneider and Hoffmaster had phenomenal Freshman campaigns defensively and at the plate. Schneider was a tough out during the second half of the 2013 season. Alyssa racked up 25 singles and 19 RBIs this past season and will be looked upon to improve on these totals. Hoffmaster was a menace on the bases, with her elite speed as she motored around the sacks to score 16 runs this past season. Hoffmaster will see an increased total in both stolen bases and runs scored during the 2014 campaign.

Junior Bri Loftin has been a mainstay in the offensively lineup for the Lady Haymakers throughout her career. She has the speed and athleticism to play in the infield as well as the outfield. She is a fierce compe-titor that flips the switch when the first pitch is thrown. This past season, she was able to hit a pair of triples and score 24 runs while batting .278. Loftin is a potent threat during each at-bat and in 2014, she has the potential to increase all of her season totals, as she has gained confidence and maturity as a softball player.

Having one of the better freshman campaigns that a Lady Haymaker has posted in quite some time was infielder Sarah Yocom. Yocom show-cased great plate discipline with seven doubles and 25 runs scored this past season. Yocom gained very valuable experience during the past fall and summer seasons, to make herself a very difficult out for opponents.

Behind the plate, Junior Reilly Goings and Alynne Myer both have valuable experience in captaining the Lady Haymaker defense. Goings batted .306 and scored 28 runs for the Red and Black this past season as the starter behind the plate. Myer did her best to get on base with eight walks earned to post an on-base percentage of .417. Myer will see an expanded role for Cozad to reach new heights during the 2014 season.
