Playing with great confidence and being on their own pitch was the formula for success for the Minutemaids as they were victorious 2-1 in an overtime showdown with Grand Island Northwest on Thursday afternoon in Lexington.
In the very early moments of the first half of play, the Lady Vikings were able to light up the scoreboard with a goal. Lexington misplayed a ball defensively and Northwest took advantage and led 1-0.
As the first half continued to grind away, the Minutemaids continued to push forward and were having success putting together a lot of good runs towards the goal and maintaining possession of the ball.
As the time dwindled down in the first half of play, Ashlee Barrientos was on the receiving end of a precision pass from Sandra Gomez and she put a charge into the ball that flexed the net to knot the score at 1-1 entering the break.
Throughout the second half of play, the Lexington offense was clicking and had numerous runs deep into enemy territory that just missed on scoring. Barrientos was moved to the midfield position and was doing a wonderful job of dishing the ball forward to Elizabeth Romero and Maricela Dones. Elizabeth Moro’s great effort and hustle was paying off dearly, as she nearly scored three goals, her best chance was a great ball that was crossed by Jazmin and Moro corralled it and booted a kick that just went over the crossbar. Despite the great effort and gumption on the pitch, Lexington was still deadlocked at 1-1 with Northwest.
In the first overtime period, the Minutemaids were able to get on the when Ashlee Barrientos scored her second goal of the game to give the Orange and Black a 2-1 lead.
With the lead on their side, the Lexington defense alignment adjusted to defend the lead and their efforts were rewarded when time ran out on the Lady Vikings. The Minutemaids notched the 2-1 overtime victory.
Lexington had 32 shots on goal to Northwest’s 22 attempts.
Ashlee Barrientos scored both goals for the Orange and Black.
Sandra Gomez and Maricela Dones recorded assists in the contest for Lexington.
Minutemaid goalkeeper Kenzie Hammond had 21 saves for the Orange and Black.
