Reds Seniors Edged In Shootout Against Albion

Catching the very contagious hitting bug powered the Albion Seniors to defeat Cozad 15-5 in an elimination game on Monday during the 2014 Nebraska American Legion Class B State Championships that were held in Blair.

The Reds got on the board first with a pair of runs in the opening inning. Jake Paulsen singled and then scored on Nate Bubak’s RBI-single. Bubak scored soon thereafter on Tysen Werner’s RBI-double into left field to make the score 2-0 at the midway point of the opening inning.

Albion responded with their own scoring rally that resulted in a three-run inning. A double off the bat of Pierce Koch led the power surge to give Albion a 3-2 lead at the end of the first.

The score remained 3-2 through the first two innings. Cozad was able to threaten to score in the third inning when Jake Paulsen got on base via an Albion miscue and then after Nate Bubak waked the pair occupied second and third base, only to be stranded as a result of the Albion defense retiring the third out of the inning.

In the bottom half of the third inning, the Albion hitters warmed up yet again. The Redbirds hit a back-to-back triple and homerun by Tyler Hedlund and Derek Gentrup to spark the scoring rally. Zac Glidden added another run after singling and then scoring on Travis Kennedy’s RBI-single to give the Albion Nine a 6-2 lead at the conclusion of three innings of play.

The Cozad Nine attempted to dent the deficit again in the fourth inning with Hank Pflaster singling and then Sam Cole getting hit by a pitch. Albion was able to stifle the batters and stiffen their defense to record the last two outs of the inning and hold onto their 6-2 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Albion pounded out four more runs on four hits to take a commanding 10-2 lead.

In response, the Cozad offense rallied for three runs in the top of the fifth inning with Colin Wetovick belting an RBI-triple that scored Conor Young after he had walked. Tysen Werner also connected on an RBI-single that scored Wetovick. Bubak scored on an error soon after to make the score 10-5.

Over the final two innings of regulation, Albion scored three and two runs to reach the ‘run-rule’ score of 15-5 and etch the victory.

Nate Bubak was 1-1 at the plate with two walks, two stolen bases and two runs scored to lead the Reds offense.

Tysen Werner was 2-3 at the dish with a double and a pair of RBI’s.
