Knights, Pirates Post Stellar Marks At Elwood Track Invite

Finishing a week strong was the name of the game for the Knights and Pirates as they competed in the Elwood Track and Field Invitational on Friday.


The Eustis/Farnam Knights and Lady Pirates finished third and fourth place in the team race. Expressing his excitement, Lady Knight head coach Caleb Wall stated, “Our girls did an outstanding job competing with 14 season best efforts.”


The Elwood boys were third overall on the boys’ side of the team standings. “We felt our athletes competed pretty well,” expressed Elwood head coach Kurt Banzhaf. “We have some athletes showing some good efforts early in the season.”


Winning a pair of gold medals on the oval, Eustis/Farnam’s Jessica Deterding ran away from the field in the 400 (1:03) and 800-meter (2:34) events. Deterding started her day with a runner-up finish in the triple jump, reaching past 32’2”.


Elwood was led on the cinders by the elite sprinting ability of Taylor Carlberg winning the 200-meter dash in 28.6 seconds, with her sister and training partner Tobie Carlberg earning the bronze medal in 29.2 seconds. Taylor was edged at the line in the 100-meter dash, forced to settle for runner-up honors in 13.5 seconds.


Running in one of the more grueling events, Lady Knight McKenna Rieker was up to the task of conquering the 300-meter hurdles in 51.5 seconds, good enough for second place overall.


The Elwood 3200-meter relay was the runner-up to start the day and the Lady Knights 1600-meter quartet earned the silver medalist accolades to finish the day.


Pirate standout Skyler Werger was the lone TRIBUNE-area gold medalist in winning the long jump with a top effort of 20’0.5” to clinch the top spot. Werger was third overall in the triple jump with a mark of 38’9”.


Going vertical to soar over 5’6” in the high jump was Elwood’s Kalyn Beam to finish third overall.


Returning state qualifier Deone Wilson went the distance to win the bronze medal in the 3200-meter run with an eight-lap clocking of 11:45.


Dueling it out in the middle distance events, Pirate Billie Smith was third overall in the 800-meters (2:12) and Elwood teammate Zack Hackbart was fourth to the tape in the 400-meter (55.8) dash.


Short-handed, the Eustis/Farnam boys were led by the throwing efforts of Jared Rupp and Logan Purdy.


Rupp displayed great strength and explosiveness to power the shotput past 41’10.5” to finish second overall in the event.


Purdy did an outstanding job in spinning the platter to the 124’2” mark to earn runner-up honors in the discus.


Showcasing great depth throughout the running events, Elwood earned silver medalist accolades in the 1600 and 3200-meter relays.
