Lexington teachers pursuing higher education can receive tuition reimbursement starting in May.
Monday night, the Lexington Board of Education allocated $15,000 for the teacher tuition reimbursement program it adopted last month. Superintendent John Hakonson said the board felt they should place a limit on the amount it will pay during the first year the program is offered and the board plans to determine additional funding on an annual basis.
Beginning May 25th, 2014, teachers can be reimbursed up to $180 per credit hour when taking classes towards a master’s degree in their field, or in another field if requested by the district to get an endorsement. Teachers cannot use the reimbursement for classes to become administrators.
The board approved a bid proposal of $14,500 from Price’s Tree Service to remove structures, foundations and other debris from the property at 108 E. 13th Street. Under the arrangement, Lexington Public Schools will be responsible for paying dump fees. No other bids were received.
In October, board members approved buying the property from Robert and Rebecca Crandall for $50,000. The Crandall’s will be allowed to salvage some items within the house before it is demolished and work should begin within two weeks.
The district has not determined how it will use the property, but wanted it due to its proximity to the Lexington Middle School/YMCA addition underway, said Hakonson.
The board also approved spending $29,766 for fifth grade social studies curriculum materials from Pearson, which includes shipping. These materials are in addition to others previously purchased.
Board members were to meet with Senator Kate Sullivan, chair of the Nebraska legislature's education committee, at noon on Tuesday to discuss legislative issues affecting public education. They will meet in a special session on Friday for a facilities tour that will include long range planning in identifying and prioritizing district needs regarding buildings and grounds. They will also discuss how to use the former National Guard Armory.
