Former Cozad Resident: Geraldine Smock-Slater, 65 (1948-2013)

Geraldine “Jackie” Smock-Slater was born to Oran and Grace (Heine) Smock on July 8th, 1948 and died on September 20th, 2013, at the age of 65. Jackie was the sixth child to be born to this union.

Jackie graduated from Cozad High School with the class of 1966. After graduation, Jackie went to the Business College in Grand Island. After Business College she moved to Washington D.C. to work for the F.B.I. for a short time, later moving back to Grand Island to work at the  ordinance plant until they closed. She then moved to Shelton and went to work for Big L Construction until it closed. She then moved to Riverton, Wyoming and went to work for a dry cleaning business.

While in Riverton, she married Ward Slater on April 10th, 1981. After her marriage, she moved to Aztec, New Mexico, where she worked for Rite Way Cleaning until her health wouldn’t let her work anymore.

Geraldine is survived by her husband Ward and step-daughter Kim; one sister, Clara Arfmann of Lincoln, Nebraska; four brothers, Oran Eugene (Judith) Smock, Dale Smock, Ervin Smock, Richard “Dick” Smock; sister in-law, Ree Smock and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Oran and Grace; mother in-law Alvrada Slater; grandparents Alveva and Roy Smock, Lula and Henry Heine; one sister, Judy Smock; one brother, Carl Smock; two sisters in-law, Donna Smock and Regina Smock.

Geraldine had chosen cremation and wanted to be buried in Cozad with her parents.

Private burial will be held October 12th for family.
