The Cozad Reds Juniors scored early and were able to stay on the offensive to net a 13-5 victory over Gothenburg in the opening round of the B6 District Baseball Tournament in McCook on Saturday.
Taking to the dish with gumption, Cozad scored four runs in the opening inning. Sam Cole earned a walk and then scored on a deep drive into the outfield off the bat of Jordan Henry that resulted in an RBI-double. Soon thereafter, Kaleb Gibbens connected on an RBI-single to score Henry. To wrap up the scoring fury, Mitchell Fischer belted a two-RBI single to score both Logan Geiser and Gibbens to make the score 4-0.
Gothenburg was able to dent the deficit in the bottom of the first inning when Riley Ostendorf hit a two-out single into right field and then was able to score soon after with great hustle to make the score 4-1 at the end of the first inning.
The Reds were able to sway the pendulum of momentum back in their favor in the top of the second inning with four more runs being scored. Showing great hustle on the basepaths after being very disciplined at the dish, Sam Cole, Jordan Henry, Logan Geiser and Kaleb Gibbens all scored for Cozad to extend their lead to 8-1.
Gothenburg again was forced to respond. The Melons were up to the challenge, as Brant May and Radley Shaw were able to score on singles off the bat of Braeden Brundage and Quinn Haynes to make the score 8-3 at the conclusion of two innings of play.
The score remained 8-1 until Cozad was able to add insurance runs in the fourth inning when Kaleb Gibbens led off with a double and then scored on miscommunications by Gothenburg. Mitchell Fischer then earned a walk and was replaced by courtesy runner Hunter Holbein, who used his speed to score on Matt Menagh’s ground out to the third baseman to make the score 10-3.
The Melons were able to scratch across a run in the fourth inning, when Riley Ostendorf connected on a one-out double and then scored on Tyler Tiede’s hard-to-handle hit at the pitcher to make the score 10-4 at the end of four innings of play.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Cozad offense was able to seal the deal in the opening round with RBI-singles off the bats of Matt Menagh and Ben Wetovick, as Gibbens and Holbein scored.
One inning later, Jordan Henry doubled and then scored on Mitchell Fischer’s RBI-single to make the score 13-4 in favor of the Reds Juniors.
Gothenburg attempted to rally in the waning moments with Radley Shaw singled and then scored on Quin Haynes hit past the third baseman, but that was all the Melons could muster in their final at-bat, as Cozad snared the 13-5 win. On the mound for Cozad, Sam Cole earns the victory.
Offensively, Kaleb Gibbens was dynamite for Cozad with a 3-4 outing with a double, four runs scored and a pair of RBI’s.
Scoring twice for the Reds were Sam Cole, Logan Geiser and Hunter Holbein along with Jordan Henry circling the sacks three times.
Riley Ostendorf led the Melons Juniors with a 2-4 effort at the dish with a walk, double and two runs scored.
Radley Shaw scored twice and Brant May circled to score once for Gothenburg.
