Leaving no doubt, the Cozad Seniors went ballistic offensively and cruised past Holdrege 12-2 in the Nebraska American Legion Seniors B6 District Championship that was played on Tuesday evening at Muny Park in Cozad.
The Reds scored the first run of the contest, when Jake Paulsen singled and then was able to score on Nate Bubak’s RBI-single into left field to make the score 1-0.
In the Holdrege half of the first inning, the First Nationals were able to snare the lead with a pair of runs scored in the opening inning with Jake Samuelson and Collin Sindt circling the bases after singles.
Trailing 2-1, the Cozad offense again was able to spark the offense with Chase Dugan belting a double into centerfield. Dugan would score on Brendan Molden’s deep drive into left field that was mishandled to knot the score at 2-2 at the end of the second inning.
The spark that the Reds were feeling in the opening innings was fueled to start a scoring fury in the third inning, when Cozad blew up for eight runs. Conor Young scored twice for the Reds in the stanza, along with Jake Paulsen, Colin Wetovick, Hank Pflaster, Chase Dugan, Brendan Molden and Dillon Budd; who all scored once, as Holdrege struggled to record the third out and Cozad garnered the lead 10-2.
The score remained 10-2 until Cozad plated a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning when Jake Paulsen singled and Colin Wetovick was hit by a pitch to move the runners in scoring position. Paulsen would score on Nate Bubak’s ground out and Wetovick circled to score on Tysen Werner’s RBI-single to give the Reds the 12-2 victory and a berth in the Class B?State Seniors Tournament to be played in Blair, starting on Saturday.
Nate Bubak went the distance on the hill to earn the win while allowing just two runs on six hits while striking out four batters.
