Gothenburg Volleyball Is Very Optimistic For 2014

Expectations are very high in the Gothenburg preseason volleyball camp, as nine letterwinners return that includes four starters from the 2013 season that was able to flourish on the hardwood and post a record of 27-5 overall.

“If we can develop defensive play, we have the offensive tools to be a good team,” expressed Lady Swede head coach Mary Clark.

Shining bright in the eyes of opponents for the Gothenburg opponents is Nebraska recruit Tiani Reeves at her middle hitter position in the heart of the Lady Swedes lineup. This past season, Reeves was able to fend off nagging injuries and prosper on the hardwood. Tiani knocked down 368 kills, served up 45 aces and had 89 total blocks during the 2013 season. Reeves has a fast arm swing and has elite explosiveness to virtually make her unstoppable when she is ‘In the Zone’ as she stands 6’1”. Reeves has the potential to have an outstanding season for the Lady Swedes, as long as she can get hitting assistance along the frontline to fend off defensive attention from opponents.

Coming into her own this past season and prospering at the net is Junior Kim Whiting. Whiting brings great height to the front line for the Lady Swedes. Whiting has gained valuable experience during her career at Gothenburg and this last season she saw extensive action. Whiting has the potential to be a force on the edge or in the middle for the Lady Swedes, as she has gained strength and confidence that will prevail against opponents at the net. Whiting had 105 kills and 26 blocks this past season and for the Gothenburg Volleyball squad to repeat the great success, she will need to improve on those statistics.

Junior Madi Gilg did an excellent job of distributing the ball to the hot hitters this past season as she compiled 215 set assists in 2013. Gilg will be joined by Sophomore Mckenna Peterson in piloting the Lady Swede 6-2 offense from the setter positions.

Junior Blaire Gibbens has the potential to make an impact on the success of the Lady Swedes this season, even more than she did in 2013. Gibbens was a full rotation athlete that was good for 127 digs this past season. Gibbens will see her role expand greatly with many more hitting oppor-tunities.

Junior Mady Vogel displayed glimpses of her potential this past season and for the 2014 season, she will be a factor at the net for the Lady Swedes.

Senior Bailey Aden and Juniors Sara Brown and Shae Brown will be instrumental to the success of the Lady Swedes this season as they patrol the backline as defensive specialist and key the transition game.

Getting her feet wet in varsity athletics will be Freshman Gracie Stienike, as she will see a role for the Lady Swedes from an outside hitter position.
