Cozad Linksters State Bound
Playing on their home course three times within the past week along with the momentum of experience at Cozad Country Club, the Lady Haymakers were able to overcome the effects of the strong winds to create their own storm of emotions as they finished as the runner-up in the team race at the 2016 C4 District Golf Championships that was held on Monday.
The Cozad linksters combined to score a 395, trailing only Kearney Catholic’s championship winning total of 386. The Lady Haymakers and Kearney Catholic will be joined by third place finisher Broken Bow in playing in the 2016 Class C State Championships that will be held in North Platte this coming week.
“All of the girls played really well battling the wind throughout the day to finish second overall in the team standings,” expressed Lady Haymaker Head Golf Coach Teresa Osborn.
Leading the way for the Lady Haymakers was the one-two punch of Abby Cornelius and Kaylei Becker with top five accolades being earned by the dynamic duo.
Lady Star Morgan Thiele was the gold medalist with a score of 75. Amanda Fay of Grand Island Central Catholic was second overall with a score of 83.
One stroke behind Lady Crusader Fay was Cozad’s Abby Cornelius with a score of 84 in third place, after finishing her round with a remarkable back nine score of 39.
Three strokes back of Cornelius was fellow Lady Haymaker Super Senior Kaylei Becker with a score of 87. Becker shot a score of 40 on the front nine to stay within contention of the leaders throughout the event.
Doing her best to contribute the most at the best time possible, Aaliyah Wilkins circled the course to score a 104 with her best part of her day being on the front nine with a score of 49. Wilkins just missed on making the top ten individual medal winners.
Cozad Freshman Ayden Ourada started off her day with a 55 on the back nine which contributed to her 18-hole score of 120 to chip in to the Red and Black’s final tally.
Belle Hagan scored a score of 138 with a back nine score of 59 for the Lady Haymakers.
