Lexington advanced in a defensive showdown 22-20 over Grand Island Northwest in the opening game of the Class B-5 Girls Basketball Tourney. Hannah Mandelko had a team-high six points.
Broken Bow capitalized upon a strong fourth quarter in downing Gothenburg, 50-47 in the C1-11 Subdistrict Boys Basketball Tournament. Dustin Walker collected 18 points, including a near perfect nine-for-ten shooting effort from the charity stripe.
Aside from a fast start, the Minutemen were unable to match strides with Holdrege and faltered 47-31 in the Class B-5 District Semifinals. Matt Miller, Nate Jaeger and Kyle Heineman all scored six points for Lexington.

Hastings Adams Central sidelined the Cozad cagers 72-60 in the C1-7 District Basketball Tournament. The Haymakers finished with a 12-10 record.
Lexington moved into the Class B-5 Girls District Finals with a win over Holdrege 65-43. Erin Jones paced the Maid offensive attack with 19 points. Nicole Shirley and Jessica Hanson added eight points apiece.
15 YEARS AGO
(1995)
Highly-touted Ogallala downed Cozad in the Class B-7 District Boys Basketball Tournament, 55-51. Three Haymakers finished with double figures in the scoring category. Aaron Hendricksen had a team-high 16 points. Chad Rosenstiel and Charlie Gillen both contributed 10 points for Cozad.
Lexington bumped Hastings 56-50 in the first round of the Class B-5 District Tournament in Kearney. Jason Hubbard topped the Lexington attack with 17 points. Ryan Bliven and Ryan Thomalla added ten and eight points, respectively for the Minutemen.
Cozad's Heather Rhoadarmer and Becky Stieb of Lexington captured gold medals for Doane College in the NIAC indoor track and field championships. Rhoadarmer won the shotput with a 45'7.25" effort and Stieb prevailed in the mile, 5:10.18.
20 YEARS AGO
(1990)
Lexington advanced into the Nebraska Class 'B' State Championship with a 64-47 win over Minden. The win pushed the Minutemen record to 16-5. Kurt Weeder and Marc Hock led the Lexington scorers in the title game with 17 and 16 points respectively.
Cozad faltered in a District B-6 boys basketball game against Minden, 44-40. Scott Mackowski tossed 16 points to lead the Haymaker assault. Brendan Holbein added 10 points.
Hastings Adams Central ran past Gothenburg 58-44 in the B-6 Boys Basketball Tournament. The Swedes were led by Todd Geiken's 17-point scoring performance. Roman Windrum added 11 points.
Farnam qualified for the Nebraska Class 'D' State Basketball Championships with a 46-40 victory over Paxton. Kendi Lehman led the Lady Greenbacks with 11 points in the title game.
25 YEARS AGO
(1985)
Gothenburg finished as the runner-up in the Nebraska Class 'B' Girls State High School Basketball Championships in Lincoln. Elkhorn spoiled the Lady Swede's dreams in the title game, 58-53. Earlier, the Lady Swedes moved into the finals with wins over Plattsmouth, 57-51, and Alliance, 59-39. Kressy DeCamp scored 30 points in the final game. She totaled 72 points during the tourney. In the final, Betsy Kuxhausen and Kristi Wahlgren fired 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Kressy DeCamp was named to the All-Class State Tourney Team in Lincoln. Others on the unit included Jeannine Kardell of Omaha Marian; Jill Dau, Elkhorn; Linda Schnitzler, Battle Creek; and Trudi Veerhusen of Adams.
Honored on the 1984-85 All-Southwest Conference Honor Basketball team were Donna Carlson, Minden; Kim Crider, Lexington; Pam Davis, Cozad; Kressy DeCamp, Gothenburg; Jill Fox, Cozad; Canda Kinnan, Cozad; Sharla Meester, Holdrege; Wendy Millard, Lexington; Kristi Wahlgren, Gothenburg; and Deb Workman, Holdrege.
30 YEARS AGO
(1980)
Lexington outlasted Cozad in the Class 'B' District Boys Basketball Tourney Semifinals, 69-55. Joe Ringenberg, Monte Maloley and Rick Schnacker paced the Minutemen with 17, 16 and 11 points, respectively. Cozad was led in points by Kevin Martin with 15 points. Dave Cornelius dropped in 10 points to contribute for the Haymakers.
Gothenburg advanced in the 'B' District Tournament with a 69-48 decision over Ogallala in boys basketball. Jay Novacek popped the nets for 30 points to lead the Swedes.
Dee Debban and Jane Shipwright scored 15 and 13 points to led the Minutemaids past Gothenburg, 47-31. Lisa Tatum topped the Lady Swedes scoring with 10 points.
Eustis held an early advantage, but faded in a E1-11 boys cage match against Sumner, 46-42. Kraig Koch meshed 21 points and Mitch Gruber had 11 points despite the Tiger setback.
